macOS says "not enough space" to update, but the download fits? The install needs extra room while it runs.

On a dev Mac, check:
du -sh ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData
docker system df

A macOS update needs more free space than its download. Find what is using your disk, clear Xcode, Docker, node_modules and AI tool caches safely, then retry.

5 disk space features I'm considering for a Mac dev cleaner. Which would you use?

I build DevCleaner, a Mac app for clearing developer caches: Xcode DerivedData, simulators, Docker, node_modules and similar. The roadmap is public and voting decides order. Five new ideas:

1. Multiple versions view. Most Macs I look at have three Xcode-era simulator runtimes, two JDKs and several Node versions nobody uses. One list grouped by toolchain, with a suggestion which version your projects still need.

2. Startup items manager. Launch agents and daemons with the app that owns them, a toggle to turn them off and on, and a flag for orphans whose app is gone.

3. Simulate mode. A dry run listing every path a clean would delete and the space it frees. Plus exclusion rules beyond single folders.

4. Leftovers of uninstalled apps. This is the risky one, so the checks are strict: no installed app or LaunchServices match, no running process, unused for 14+ days, and nothing pre-selected.

5. Disk map and duplicate finder. A treemap of any folder, and duplicate detection that knows APFS clones share storage, so they don't show up as fake savings.

What would you use, what would you never trust? Vote at https://devcleaner.app/roadmap or tell me in the comments.

DevCleaner 1.16.1: fixing a cleanup that froze on "Cleaning"

DevCleaner is a macOS app that cleans developer caches like Xcode DerivedData, simulators, node_modules and Docker data.

Version 1.16.1 fixes one annoying bug. With automatic cleanup turned on, DevCleaner cleans up after you quit Xcode or another dev app. In some cases the app then got stuck on "Cleaning" and stopped responding.

What changed:

The stuck "Cleaning" state is now cleared safely.

A cleanup that runs longer than 10 minutes stops itself.

Heavy disk work moved off the main thread, so the window stays responsive while it scans and deletes.

Each automatic cleanup step is now logged, which makes problems like this easier to trace.

If you already have DevCleaner, Sparkle will offer the update (or use Check for Updates). Otherwise download it from https://devcleaner.app/.

Clear Xcode DerivedData one cache at a time

Xcode DerivedData is regenerable build state, and it is not your source code.

DevCleaner 1.16.0 for macOS shows Compilation Cache, Module Cache, Symbol Cache, SDK Stat Caches, and per-project folders separately, so you can clear one cache without wiping every project. Quit Xcode first.

Free Safe cleanup: https://devcleaner.app

DevCleaner for macOS 1.16.0 is out.
Local AI models (Ollama, LM Studio, Hugging Face, PyTorch) now show one by one, so you can remove a single model, not the whole cache. Credentials like ~/.ssh are never offered.
