Legacy Tomb: Ghost in the Machine - Resurrecting Legacy Python Code Offline

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine

  What I Built

For Week 4, I built Legacy Tomb, a local-first web tool designed to bring abandoned, forgotten Python code back to life.

When I saw the theme "Ghost in the Machine," I immediately thought about those old legacy Python 2 scripts we all stumble upon in dusty repositories. These forgotten files sit untouched, haunting modern systems because their syntax is broken and outdated. I wanted to build a safe, offline space to resurrect them. My tool scans old code for deprecated patterns, like old print statements or outdated urllib imports, and automatically upgrades them to clean, secure Python 3 syntax.

  Demo

Because my tool runs 100% locally to protect privacy, you can easily test it on your own machine. You can find full interface previews, setup steps, and execution guides directly inside the GitHub repository below!

  Code

You can view the full repository, check the documentation, and run it yourself from my GitHub:

A lightweight, local-first offline Python code modernization utility built for Hacktoberfest Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.

Legacy Tomb: Ghost Code Resurrector

A lightweight, local-first web utility built for the Hacktoberfest Week 4: Ghost in the Machine challenge. It acts as an offline inspection and modernization tool for abandoned, deprecated, or legacy Python code snippets.

Overview & Concept

The Ghost in the Machine challenge focuses on reviving abandoned codebases, legacy systems, or forgotten technologies. Legacy Tomb addresses this by providing an offline digital resurrection chamber that takes obsolete Python syntax, audits its vulnerabilities, and automatically modernizes it for Python 3 all without sending a single line of code to external third-party cloud servers.

Features

100% Offline & Private: Runs entirely on your local machine with zero external API calls or cloud dependencies.

Syntax Audit Engine: Scans legacy Python 2 patterns, deprecated print statements, obsolete
urllib
calls, and old exception syntax.

Automated Modernization: Generates clean, secure Python 3 equivalent code instantly.

Tech Stack & Tools

Language: Python 3.x

…

View on GitHub

  How I Built It

I built this project to be completely self-contained without needing any cloud API keys or heavy dependencies.

I used Python 3 for the core logic.

I used Streamlit to create a simple and clean web interface that runs right in the local browser.

Instead of sending code to an external cloud server, I built a local Syntax Audit Engine using Python's regular expressions. It hunts down specific legacy patterns and replaces them on the spot.

By keeping everything local, the code never leaves the user's machine.

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation is vital for privacy and security. If developers want to update sensitive company code or personal projects, they shouldn't be forced to paste their private scripts into a closed, third-party cloud tool. By building this openly and locally, developers keep total control over their data. Open innovation makes it possible to share tools that protect our privacy instead of sacrificing it.

  The Spirit of It

There is a strange kind of nostalgia when you open up code written ten years ago. You see the style, the rough edges, and the intent of a developer who solved a problem long before today's frameworks existed. Instead of just throwing those old scripts away because they refuse to run on modern machines, Legacy Tomb respects the original work. It fixes the syntax while keeping the heart and logic alive, ensuring those early lines of code are not lost to time.

MicroAudit AI: Local Contract Risk Analyzer

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

  What I Built

As a freelancer or side hustler, getting a new client agreement is exciting. But going through pages of dense legal text to spot dangerous clauses is exhausting, and hiring a lawyer for every small project isn't always practical.

I built MicroAudit AI, a lightweight, local-first web utility designed to help freelancers, independent contractors, and micro-consultants audit client contracts before signing. It instantly flags high-risk terms, like Net 60/90 payment delays, unlimited revision loops, broad indemnification, and premature IP transfers, and gives simple, actionable recommendations on how to negotiate safer terms.

Freelancers and small agency owners would gladly use a tool like this because it protects their income, saves hours of manual checking, and prevents costly legal traps.

  Demo

Since MicroAudit AI runs completely locally to protect client privacy, here is how the application performs when auditing contract text:

  Code

You can explore the full source code, architecture, and local setup guide in my public GitHub repository:

👉 GitHub Repository: https://github.com/kalyanvoleti/microaudit-ai

  How I Built It

I designed the project to be fast, clean, and completely free to execute locally on any standard computer:

Python: Powers the underlying text processing engine and rule detection logic.

Streamlit: Serves as the user interface framework, offering an intuitive browser frontend.

Local Rule Engine & Private Inference Structure: Built using custom legal pattern detection algorithms that run entirely on the user's client machine. This eliminates third-party cloud dependencies, API keys, and external service costs.

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Client contracts contain sensitive confidential data, such as exact payment rates, client names, project scope details, and strict Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs).

Sending private agreement text to cloud-hosted proprietary APIs presents real privacy and compliance risks. Open innovation and local-first execution allow developers to build powerful productivity tools that guarantee 100% data privacy on the user's local hardware at zero ongoing subscription cost.

  Prize Categories

Main Challenge Track: Side Hustle
