Avid Interplay is a media asset management and workflow system developed by Avid Technology for use in video, broadcast and audio post-production, for handling asset management and workflow automation in a client-server model.[3][4] Interplay is marketed by Avid as a nonlinear "workflow engine", with support for searching, viewing, logging, archiving and automatically transcoding media.[4]

Avid later used the name Interplay | Production for the product. In 2018, it was renamed to MediaCentral | Production Management, although some components kept the Interplay name.[5]

Features

[edit]

Interplay's main features are:

  • Management and organization of media assets
  • Native integration with Avid Media Composer[3] and Pro Tools[6] for easy asset access
  • Asset transcoding (Interplay Transcode)
  • Tape ingest (Interplay Low-Res Encode)
  • Archives management with low-resolution proxy generation (Interplay Archive)
  • Asset transfers over WAN (Interplay Transfer)

Initial release

[edit]

Avid Interplay was released and presented at NAB 2006[7], with a starting price of €16,700, depending on configuration. The base package solely consisted of Interplay Engine and Interplay Access.[8]

At launch, the system was positioned mainly at broadcast and post-production facilities already using Avid editing and storage systems. Contemporary reporting describes the core engine as working with the Unity MediaNetwork family, while Media Composer clients could access assets on the Interplay server directly.[3][4]

Later development

[edit]

Interplay continued to be developed through a series of Interplay | Production releases. The software included separate components such as Interplay Access, Engine, Archive Engine, Media Indexer, Transcode and Transfer, which received their own updates.[2]

From the 2018 release series onward, Avid began referring to Interplay | Production as MediaCentral | Production Management.[5] Avid documentation continued to use the Interplay name for some established components, particularly Interplay Access and parts of the production-services software. Current Avid compatibility documentation, for example, continues to list Interplay Access as a client component used with MediaCentral Production Management.[6]
