Tredecuple meter is a musical meter characterized by thirteen beats in a measure. 13
8 can comprise a variable number of stressed and unstressed beats (or "strong" versus "weak" beats).
History
[edit]Erik Satie
[edit]Vexations, a piece for piano by Erik Satie written in 1893, provides a prime example of tredecuple time. According to John Cage, this exceptional piece "lasting 24 hours; 840 repetitions of a fifty-two beat piece itself involving a repetitive structure: A, A1, A, A2, each A thirteen measures long"[1].
