Unciv is a free and open source 4X strategy game based heavily on Civilization V. Developed by Yair Morgenstern, it tries to incorporate every feature of the original game under the libGDX framework and aims to be small and moddable with low hardware requirements.[2] The gameplay will be exactly like Civilization V,[3] but it does not recreate the soundtrack, graphics, or animation.[2][4] The game is available on Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux, and through itch.io,[2] but while it was planned to be released on Steam,[1] it was removed because the platform did not want to handle potential legal issues.[5]

It has a multiplayer mode using Dropbox for gameplay synchronization,[2] and the game uses a 2D style that can be edited with asset packs. Frequent updates are published. There are no microtransactions and the developer does not accept donations.[6]

As of 2023, all of Civilization V's game mechanics up to Gods & Kings expansion, except espionage, have been reimplemented.[6]
