OpenCode is a free and open-source artificial intelligence coding agent developed by Anomaly Innovations. It uses a large language model to interpret natural-language instructions, run commands and make changes across a project's source code.[2] OpenCode can be used through a terminal, desktop application, or integrated development environment (IDE), and supports models from more than 75 providers, including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, as well as locally hosted models.[3][4]
History
[edit]OpenCode is developed by Anomaly Innovations, the team behind the serverless development framework SST.[5][6] The active version of OpenCode is primarily written in TypeScript, uses Bun, and is released under the MIT License.[7][8] It is distinct from an earlier Go-based project of the same name that was archived in September 2025.[9] In February 2026, Anthropic revised its terms to make clear that consumer Claude subscriptions could not be used through unauthorized third-party harnesses. The same week, OpenCode removed support for Claude Pro and Max account keys, citing legal requests from Anthropic.[10]
In October 2026, Anomaly released OpenCode 2.0, which moved the terminal, desktop and web clients onto one shared background service.[6]
Features
[edit]OpenCode is not tied to one model provider: users connect their own providers and API keys, and it can also use locally hosted language models through llama.cpp, LM Studio, and Ollama.[2][3] The agent can edit files and run shell commands,[11] and it integrates with Language Server Protocol servers so that the model receives their feedback about the codebase.[4] It also supports the Model Context Protocol for connecting external tools and services.[4] OpenCode includes separate planning and building modes, with the planning mode restricting file modifications by default.[11] In addition to its command-line interface, it has a desktop application and an extension for VS Code and forks such as Cursor, VSCodium, and Windsurf.[12][4] OpenCode can connect to model aggregation services such as OpenRouter, allowing users to access models from multiple artificial intelligence providers through a single API.[13]
Use
[edit]In February 2026, Cloudflare released Vinext, an experimental reimplementation of most of the Next.js application programming interface on Vite. Cloudflare engineering director Steve Faulkner said he had spent a couple of hours with Anthropic's Claude in OpenCode defining the architecture, then had the model implement the API piece by piece, using the existing Next.js test suite to find problems.[14]
