Bioware cleaning house
[edit]Progressive writers are getting axed at Bioware post-Veilguard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Dragon_Age:_The_Veilguard#Writers_fired? 92.220.74.144 (talk) 14:38, 31 January 2025 (UTC)
Semi-done Reliable sources aren't reporting the layoffs as due to "progressive writers" but instead due to the underperformance of both EA Sports FC 25 & Dragon Age: The Veilguard leading EA to lower its annual revenue forecast. I've added the forecast update (see Reuters) & that BioWare restructure/downsize included Dragon Age team layoffs (see PC Gamer & IGN). Sariel Xilo (talk) 19:15, 31 January 2025 (UTC)
- You're right. The "progressive writers" was taken from Ann Lemay's post on Bluesky.
- She writes:
- "I was a writer at BioWare for 5 years (2011-2016). I leaned a lot during that time from exceptional folx in many disciplines, but also specifically from my fellow writers & our amazing editors, on both the ME & DA brands.
- Today, not a single one of those writers & editors remains employed there."
- "Folx" is, as far as I know, a term used in certeain communities, especially online, that means people who identify transgender or non-binary.
- In this bluesky-post she points out that this group (Folx) have been removed from Bioware.
- Not something that can be used in an article, but might relevant for the discussion page if this is not the end of this story. 92.220.74.144 (talk) 14:53, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- I recognize that a lot of people are impassioned about this topic, but that's WP:OR, and not really relevant. Not now, not ever. Shooterwalker (talk) 20:12, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
Concern Regarding Neutrality and Proportionality in the Veilguard Reception Section
[edit]I think the current Dragon Age: The Veilguard article presents a somewhat one-sided view of the game's reception.
The article gives a lot of weight to the positive critic reviews and Steam launch, while much of the negative player response is attributed to "review bombing." That seems too broad and overlooks legitimate criticism of the writing, dialogue, characters, player choice, and how the game compares with earlier Dragon Age titles.
The bigger issue is the treatment of the game's commercial performance. EA reported around 1.5 million players, which was nearly half of what EA expected. That doesn't mean 1.5 million copies were sold, but it is still clear evidence that the game fell well short of EA's expectations.
I'm not suggesting the article call Veilguard a "flop." I think it should simply present the full picture: strong reviews from critics and a successful Steam launch, but significantly lower-than-expected overall engagement and a much more mixed player reception. Cvarkol (talk) 20:54, 3 September 2026 (UTC)
- It's just saying that the game was review-bombed, not that all criticism against the game is invalid. Harryhenry1 (talk) 04:47, 23 October 2026 (UTC)
- The 1.5m players is already included two lines down. Rambling Rambler (talk) 11:01, 23 October 2026 (UTC)
- Agreed.
- "Some outlets noted that the user reviews of Veilguard on Steam, which requires users to play the game before leaving a review, had a "mostly positive" rating."
- You don't need to play the game, only purchase it. The steam score never reached even the lowest critic scores showcased here, and has since dropped to mixed.
- It's sufficient to mention the reviewbombing as confirmed and actioned by metacritic, the rest is contrived flattery.
- Summarizing critics as "divided" on the impact of player choices is disingenuous when the reviews cited either ignore the matter or express disappointment. ~2026-56712-65 (talk) 13:28, 23 October 2026 (UTC)
Shut down or shutting down?
[edit]I haven't seen news that it is *shut down* yet, only that it is *shutting down*, which is typically not instant. Can we please get confirmation that they have *actually* shut down? ~2026-49967-96 (talk) 22:48, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
Inaccurate description of the misgendering scene
[edit]The DA: Veilguard section contains the following sentence:
> Veilguard [...] included a lengthy 2-minute cut-scene where the player is lectured for misgendering an NPC.
This has two problems:
- The cut-scene in question doesn't "lecture" the player, but is an apology from an NPC (Isabella), since she makes the mistake. (Not sure if it's even possible to intentionally misgender someone in DAV.) The "lecture" itself isn't about misgendering, but about they way people can apologize in the wrong way.
- Describing a cut-scene as both "lengthy" and "2-minute" is a bit of a contradiction, especially in a game containing many narrative cut-scenes of greater length.
The article is protected, so I can't propose an edit, but here's an example of how to make this sentence more neutral and factual:
> Veilguard [...] included a scene where an NPC accidentally misgenders another NPC, and apologizes for it. ~2026-56636-44 (talk) 05:49, 23 October 2026 (UTC)
- I've removed it for now. Not only was it inaccurately depicting what the source claimed but it was also stating in WP:WIKIVOICE that it amounted to lecturing about misgendering when it's a solitary opinion piece. Given the section already includes acknowledgement from RS of negative views of the game due to it being "woke" it's unnecessary. Rambling Rambler (talk) 10:38, 23 October 2026 (UTC)
