Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. GSK (talk • edits) 19:38, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

This does not specify an appropriate detailed fair-use rationale for its use here. --Yamla (talk) 09:28, 16 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Are you actually sure that modern versions of iOS from iOS 16 to iOS 27 are still based on macOS? Cantthinkofanyusername (talk) 04:01, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

They are. In fact, their underlying code base merged back into each other over the last few revisions. macOS and iOS are now functionally different user interfaces of the same underlying Darwin kernel. 海盐沙冰 / aka irisChronomia / Talk / Uploads 09:10, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Follow-up: since all appleOSes are closed-source, and the increasing difficulty to develop jailbreaks (they've practically ceased to exist), no one can easily dismantle the two OSes down to examine them in detail.
But we can infer something from observation. Suppose that iOS26 is a completely different OS than macOS26 that shares nothing but their Darwin kernel. That will imply they use a completely different set of libraries that shares little code base. As iOS and macOS have many libraries in common (eg. Metal, CoreAudio, Cocoa, and Quartz 2D), this implies that they're developed separately. If one updated Quartz 2D in macOS to draw Liquid Glass, they can't just copy it to iOS and have to write the entire Liquid Glass again for the iPhones, and make sure the two version of Quartz 2D behaves the same.
Which bears the question: why would anyone want to do that?
On a separate note, Apple does have two completely different OSes that don't use the underlying Darwin kernel. The sepOS based on L4/Darwin runs the the secure enclave, and the real-time OS RTKit runs everything from AirPods and Apple Pencils to the R1. Neither of these two draws their GUI or has audio. 海盐沙冰 / aka irisChronomia / Talk / Uploads 12:37, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I just wanted to let you know that just because iOS shares the same base with macOS doesn't mean iOS is based on macOS, for example, PureOS and Ubuntu Linux are both based on Debian, but does that mean PureOS is based on Ubuntu Linux? The answer is no Cantthinkofanyusername (talk) 21:46, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The article goes on to explain that it was developed by the MacOS team, and Jobs himself said "iPhone runs OS X" before it was officially named iOS. Both systems have of course deviated significantly since then, but the original are what they are. Note: response quoted from , itself a ChompyTheGogoat's comment on IrisChronomia's user talk page. 海盐沙冰 / aka irisChronomia / Talk / Uploads 23:08, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
But that was an older version of iOS, what about modern versions of iOS from iOS 16 to iOS 27? Cantthinkofanyusername (talk) 23:00, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
You'll need to define what you mean by "based on". I'll note that this thread is treading in original research territory. 海盐沙冰 / aka irisChronomia / Talk / Uploads 23:05, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Fine, my definition of "based on" is "built on"/"derived from" Cantthinkofanyusername (talk) 17:17, 13 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
