Can you help verify translations of articles from Klingon

[edit]

Hello Mathglot,

Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from Klingon to English Wikipedia?

This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original Klingon article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:

There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including Klingon , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from Klingon. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.

If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

 1. Worf
 2. Chancellor Gorkon
 3. Lurok
 4. Korek
 5. General Chang

All you have to do, is compare the English article to the Klingon article, and assess them "Pass" or "Fail" (the Pass and Fail templates may be useful here). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then assessing it, that's even better, but it isn't required.) Also please note that we are assessing accuracy not completeness, so if the English article is much shorter that is okay, as long as whatever has been translated so far is factually accurate.

If you can help, please ping me here to let me know. You can add your pass/fails above, right next to each link, or you may indicate your results below. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 18:22, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

Conflict of interest in Wikipedia
Information icon Hello, Mathglot. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

 • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
 • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the request edit template);
 • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
 • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
 • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies.

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.

Comments and requests

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps – disclosure, and a form of peer review.

Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you must do).

 • Disclosure is the most important, and first step. While you need not reveal your identity (anonymity is strictly protected by our outing policy) would you please disclose if you have some connection with XXXXX XXXXXXX, either directly, or indirectly through a third party (e.g. a PR agency or the like)? You can answer however you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a connection, please disclose it.
 • Peer review – After you respond, we can discuss the peer review process, if appropriate. Please reply below, to keep the discussion in one place.

Thanks! ~~~~

Hello, Mathglot, and welcome to Wikipedia! While efforts to improve Wikipedia are always welcome, unfortunately your contributions are not written in an English that is good enough to be useful. You appear to be more familiar with Spanish; did you know there is a Wikipedia in Spanish? You may prefer to contribute there instead. In any case, welcome to the project, and thank you for your efforts! If you need help, please feel free to notify me on my talk page. Mathglot (talk) 03:28, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

Regarding your arrows pointing right, or up to the Babel boxes, depending if you're mobile or not, you could try this:

Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.

The article :{} has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Some prod reason here.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

str_rep tests including white space and special chars

[edit]

When testing it won't bold anything past 'Wiki Ed' (and won't bold that if any characters after it are added to the boldtext param). It's as if there's a cutoff in the rendered transclusion of Template:uw-copyright-new/sandbox/body beyond which it cannot see. This also bolds nothing:

 •

but this works:

 •

So below, let's subst it into a section of it's own and then test str rep on excerpting that section, using :

Dogs chase cats

Control copyright icon Hello ExpandTemplates! Your additions to Gender have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

 • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
 • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
 • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
 • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
 • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page or to reach out to your Wiki Ed content expert. Thank you. Mathglot (talk) 03:22, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

str rep tests

[edit]
 • fails (2 blanks before pipe):
 • works:
 • works, but eats the blank after 'copyright':

str rep pattern seems to see trailing blanks before the pipe between args 2 and 3. Retest, and note the blank after 'expert' in the pattern in test a):

 • a fails: If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page or to reach out to your Wiki Ed content expert. fails!
 • b succeeds: If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page or to reach out to your Wiki Ed content expert.

Title font tester

[edit]

We seem to use Georgia, which is the only serif font that doesn't display combining accent forms correctly on Windows (in Vivaldi, Chrome, Edge, Opera); unique in those browsers are 3 forms: Garamond, Georgia, and everything else, which appears to fall back to serif. Firefox has only 2 variants, with Georgia also falling back. On iOS, it looks correct, with the accent slightly to the right, but without creating an extra space. The other distinction is that the accents (circumflex, acute) have rounded forms in Georgia, and sharp edges in the others.

Test 1: Ouvrage

 •

Subst it here:

Test 2: Chapitre

[edit]

Note: Module:CS1 translator translated book, journal, and web, but makes no claim to translate 'Chapitre'. Try brute-forcing a Chapitre citation through the Module,anyway. Start with these two examples:

 •
 •

Change 'Chapitre' to 'Ouvrage', comment out |pages totales which we don't have, and prefix with 'subst:' to get this:

 •
 •

Now run it to see what we get out of it:

Hi, Mathglot, I'm Mathglot; thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you have previously received some Disambiguation link notifications, and I wanted to offer some tips. Take this ambiguous link to "Mercury" for example; it is ambiguous because we don't know if it's about the planet, the chemical element, the Roman deity, or something else. Clicking it will not take you to a Wikipedia article; instead, it goes to a special page called a disambiguation page where all the different possible articles about "Mercury" are listed.

When we add a wikilink to an article, we want to take the reader straight to the right place, not to a disambiguation page. In order to link the correct article, we have to use the full page title, which may contain a qualifier to distinguish it from others with similar titles. In the "Mercury" example, we might want to link one of these:

or one of the other titles listed at Mercury (disambiguation).

Manual disambiguation with piped links

When adding a disambiguated link like to an article, readers only need to see the word "Mercury" in the link, not the longer disambiguated title as shown above as the shorter link will be clear in context. To achieve that, you can use a piped link, like this:

 • Mercury is the planet closest to the sun ⟶ "Mercury is the planet closest to the sun"
 • Mercury is liquid at room temperature; ⟶ "Mercury is liquid at room temperature", and
 • Mercury is the Roman deity ⟶ "Mercury is the Roman deity".

Note that although the three blue links after the arrow all look identical, if you mouse over or click them, you will see that they each go to a different article, the right article for the context.

Semi-automated disambiguation with the ambiguous link helper

There is another way to avoid adding ambiguous links to the page which you have likely already seen, but perhaps are not familiar with. When you add an ambiguous link to a page while editing, you will immediately see a pop-up message with a bold Review link prompt at the bottom as in the example to the right.

If you click "Review link" when the pop-up box appears (not here in the example) then it will pop up a new box showing all the possible pages you might want to link to (Mercury planet Mercury deity, Mercury metal, etc.). When you select the right one, it will substitute the proper link back onto the page for you. You can try this right now, if you want: just Reply to this message, and type Mercury watch for the pop-up, click "Review link", place your cursor in the input field below where it says "Target page or URL", and then choose the right link from the drop-down list, and then click the Insert link button at the bottom of the dialog box.

Going forward, please take note of ambiguous links while you are editing, and provide a link to the correct article, either by manually piping the link, or using the pop-up box to insert the correct link. Need more assistance? You can Reply below, or post a question at the Wikipedia:Teahouse.

Verifiability, citations, and page numbers

[edit]

Error: no page names specified (help).

In order to support the verifiability of Wikipedia content using in-line citations, please use the exact page number(s) within the source that verify the preceding content, not the page numbers of the entire source. We use citations to demonstrate WP:Verifiability of the content we write, so that anyone interested can look it up and verify that what we wrote accurately summarizes the source. Using the correct page numbers helps with this a great deal. If you are citing a 40-page journal article, the 'Cite this source' info in the journal article will likely provide the citation in MLA or another format, along with the page range of the entire article within that issue of the journal; for example, 252–91.

When translating that into a Wikipedia citation, avoid copying the the entire page range into your citation, as that would mean that someone would have to scan all 40 pages to determine whether what you wrote is supported by the journal article or not. (If the source is a 400-page book, it would be that much worse.) If you use the source just once in your article, you can specify just the page numbers that support your content within the citation:

If you use the source more than once, then you can specify a different page range for the second and subsequent citations by using a named reference and including the template:

{{ {}rp|277–278}}

See more examples here. If the article's citation style is short footnotes, page number(s) are included as part of the template; see Help:References and page numbers#Shortened footnotes. If you have questions, please contact the Wiki Ed content expert for your course. You can also ask for details at the Wikipedia:Teahouse. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 06:32, 25 October 2025 (UTC)

Hello, Mathglot, I'm Mathglot. Please note that pages in your personal sandbox, such as User:Example/Articles/Sandbox1, are not allowed to be categorized alongside finished articles in mainspace, per WP:USERNOCAT. The page must stay out of any categories so long as it is outside mainspace, and this is not an optional rule that you're free to disregard or ignore; you have been warned about this before.

You can provisionally list categories in your draft without affecting content categories by using one of the methods described here.

As the page has had to be pulled out of categories four times in the last week, do not readd it to categories again, because draft and sandbox pages are not allowed to be in content categories. Note as well that there can be consequences for disruption if it doesn't stop, such as page protection or deletion and/or the temporary or permanent suspension of your editing privileges.
