Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia's norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Additionally, you must be logged in, have 500 edits, and have an account age of 30 days, and you are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on any page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Edit requests are permitted only if they are wholly uncontroversial- meaning no reasonable person could possibly disagree; and do not require discussion. 331dot (talk) 17:21, 15 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

But does that not defeat the purpose of an edit request, especially since it is located on the talk page? Mx User (talk) 20:47, 15 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
The restrictions apply to every type of page on Wikipedia; edit requests are permitted if they do not require discussion to achieve a consensus.
You are probably fine to inquire as to if Netanyahu is living or deceased as long as you don't stray too far into the war. 331dot (talk) 20:56, 15 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think I misunderstood how edit requests work. My bad... Mx User (talk) 05:38, 16 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Regarding your recent edits to 2026 Makerfield by-election when you modified the page, you introduced unknown parameters. Just because you specify |some_param=some_variable does not always mean that variable will display. The |some_param= must be defined in the template. You can look at the documentation for the template you are using but it is also helpful to use the preview button before you save your edit; this helps you find any errors you have made and ensure that the values you have added are displaying correctly. Below the edit box is a Show preview button. Pressing this will show you what the page will look like without actually saving it. It is strongly recommended that you use this before saving. Note I have likely fixed the error by now so check the history of the page to see how it was fixed. If you have any questions, contact the help desk for assistance. Thank you. Got a source for them then? Sources are not optional. Morwen (talk) 02:24, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Done. But I thought infoboxes were immune to sources when it comes to these kinds of things? Mx User (talk) 02:52, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
(a) the source i am looking for that says that Prime Minister Designate is a formal title, as is implied by the infobox. (b) wikipedia is not a valid source for wikipedia, see WP:CIRCULAR for more thoughts about this. (c) infoboxes often don't have inline citations but that's because they usually summarise information in the article. Morwen (talk) 02:59, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
(a) Well, maybe it's not a formal title in its own right, but it's a logical construction? (b) The page backtracked on Burnham having more than 80% of nominations anyway (c) Well, the article did say, "Burnham will become leader of the Labour party on the 17th of July 2026 after being the only candidate in the race for Labour leader. He will become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on the 20th of July 2026. [sic]" Mx User (talk) 03:33, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also, Prime Minister-designate is not a nonsense title Mx User (talk) 03:00, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 2024–2026 United Kingdom farmers' protests, a link pointing to the disambiguation page Tom Bradshaw was added. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

[edit]

Information icon Hi Mx User! I noticed that you've made several edits in order to restore a version of an article. The impulse to repeatedly undo an edit you disagree with is understandable, but I wanted to make sure that you're aware of Wikipedia's edit warring policy. Repeatedly undoing the changes made by other users in a back-and-forth fashion like this is disallowed, even if you feel what you're doing is justifiable.

All editors are expected to discuss content disputes on article talk pages in order to try to reach a consensus with the other editors involved. If you are unable to come to an agreement, please use one of the dispute resolution options that are available in order to seek input from others. Using this approach instead of repeatedly reverting other editors' changes can help you avoid getting drawn into edit wars. Thank you.

Please stop adding the words "super intelligence" to articles as a renaming of artificial intelligence. You can suggest on the talk page. But this does not follow Wikipedia WP:COMMONNAME policy. There is no evidence that this attempted rebranding will be followed by corporations and media in the US, much less the world in general. O3000, Ret. (talk) 00:17, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

About the content itself: actually, corporations are beginning to follow this—and even if they didn't, doesn't it being the official name in the United States (and therefore, many people gradually beginning to use it) still warrant inclusion? It's not like I was renaming the pages themselves—I was merely adding an alternative name to the lead. Mx User (talk) 15:13, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
There are people who try to make money by scalping domain names, buying them in bulk in the hope that they can resell them at a high price later. So yes there are scalpers buying Slavonian (.SI) domain names. That does not mean they will ever be used. Kinda like efforts to sell .CO domains claiming CO means company when it really means Colombia. Superintelligence is an actual term. We should not add to any confusion brought about by this silly rebranding anymore than using Lake America, designed as an insult to Canada. O3000, Ret. (talk) 15:50, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

William Lai and Eric Chu - no European name transliteration

[edit]

Unless you can find wp:rs about such naming convention, which there's none, no wp:rs out there, there's **no transliteration** of English/French/European name and is usually addressed in their native 2/3/4 letters name.

(Identities are diverse in Chinese-speaking world, similar to English, French, especially German-speaking world etc. So I called them native names.) - Calmira90 (talk) 11:21, 28 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Also see mos:ZH. There are variations much like Anglophone (actually much more variations than Anglophone in my view). - Calmira90 (talk) 11:35, 28 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also actually the transliteration you put was plainly wrong, so much so there's no search hit for exact "威廉·賴清德" or "艾瑞克·朱立倫" except search result shows wiki that you incorrectly stated. - Calmira90 (talk) 12:14, 28 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
For example, there's no "戈登·章家敦", however there's "戈登·章" for Gordon Chang. - Calmira90 (talk) 12:18, 28 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
However, as mentioned earlier, usually addressed in 2/3/4-letters name not with European name transliteration. Most wp:rs addressed this way. That above outlier example has wp:rs. Also have a look at wp:unsourced. I saw you had earlier wp:unsourced notice. - Calmira90 (talk) 12:46, 28 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Regarding 1382392942, it's ok, there's even today's English wp:rs at Taipei Times.
It's just that I looked at the transliteration, looked not right. I'm not proud to be a speaker that was torn apart between good and evil, so didn't listed language level here. (I was also hospitalized/hospitalised in bad shape from Wuhan pneumonia too.) - Calmira90 (talk) 14:05, 28 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh. 1382395375 Not officially registered legal name, just nickname. Well, that's all good night. - Calmira90 (talk) Calmira90 (talk) 14:13, 28 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Category:Funny names

[edit]

I've removed your inclusion of Category:Funny names from multiple articles. Per WP:CATDEF, categories are meant to be defining characteristics of a subject. Creating an entire category to include in articles who's names you personally find funny is not an appropriate use of categories.-- Ponyobons mots 21:17, 31 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

See this comment of mine Mx User (talk) 21:24, 31 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
That only makes a stronger case for deletion as inappropriate.-- Ponyobons mots 20:44, 1 November 2026 (UTC)Reply
But what is the harm? It is appropriate for any Wikipedia user who wants to see a list of potentially funny names of things to get a good chuckle, and it's not offending anyone or promoting disruption, so why poop the party? Mx User (talk) 20:53, 1 November 2026 (UTC)Reply
Because categories are intended to note defining characteristics of the article subjects, not a means for you to exercise juvenile humour. Your choice to add it to Israel Epstein was particularly ill advised. If you don't understand why creating and adding categories based on your own perceptions is a bad idea, then you shouldn't be working with categories at all.-- Ponyobons mots 21:07, 2 November 2026 (UTC)Reply
But it's not just based on my own perceptions. Anyone can add a page to a category, and like I said, not everyone—not even myself, the creator of the category—has to find every single page in the category funny. If it can be reasonably assumed that a sizable portion of users find the name of someone or something funny, then you may go ahead and add it! Mx User (talk) 21:42, 2 November 2026 (UTC)Reply
As for Israel Epstein, I personally find his name funny because of the current political and meme climate. Why does that bother you? Mx User (talk) 21:44, 2 November 2026 (UTC)Reply
