Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop
The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the Map workshop. Anyone can make a request for a map to be created or improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed. Many maps on the web are in the public domain. See c:Template:PD-map; no need to create another free map here if it already exists on the web. See this Casebook to see what maps qualify as public domain.
You are encouraged to share information and request advice from others. Also see possible conventions toolbox, map tutorials and topographic map tutorials.

Changes to Y-DNA haplogroups in the Americas
[edit]- World map of Y-DNA haplogroups
- Article(s)
- Human Y-chromosome DNA haplogroup
- Request
- Could someone remove haplogroup R1b from Northeast America and add haplogroup Q-M3 to the Caribbean? The scientific consensus is that the presence of haplogroup R1b in contemporary Indigenous American populations is a result of post-contact admixture, and the vast majority of pre-Columbian Y-DNA samples from the Caribbean belong to haplogroup Q-M3 or one of its subclades. – Treetoes023 (talk) 00:55, 12 August 2026 (UTC)

Daher al-Umar maps: revisited
[edit]Hello. As part of my FAC nomination of Daher al-Umar, I need to make the following images compliant with MOS:COLOUR: File:Egypt_and_Syria_1768_to_1774_map_en.png and File:Daher al-Umar phases of expansion.svg. The creator and original uploader of the 1st image is no longer active but perhaps it can be converted to .svg to make it easier to edit (I'm illiterate in these matters)? As for the 2nd image, the efforts made by myself and Cmglee have evidently still not made the image compliant.
The 1st map currently shows areas and arrows of different colors indicating military campaigns and territories/territorial changes.
The 2nd map likewise shows shaded areas of different colors indicating territorial changes.
Can someone please help address the MOS:COLOUR issues by either patterning or using shades that can be distinguished in greyscale? Thank you, --Al Ameer (talk) 13:07, 25 September 2026 (UTC)

- I see. I'm now hesitant to add patterns to map to help the colourblind after AntiCompositeNumber (talk · contribs) removed a similar one in the 12:51, 16 February 2019 version of File:Egypt_Sudan_claims.svg. cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add
{{ping|cmglee}}to your reply) 17:58, 26 September 2026 (UTC)- Better striping/patterns might be better, the way that one was done was particularly unreadable. But our first port of call for colorblind accessibility should be using colors with sufficient contrast, rather than adding patterns. AntiCompositeNumber (they/them) (talk) 18:00, 26 September 2026 (UTC)
- Hello all. Between the different options, I'd prefer if the colors can simply be changed to provide sufficient contrast, per AntiCompositeNumber's suggestion. @Cmglee: Would you be able to accomodate this request for both maps? Thank you --Al Ameer (talk) 15:54, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
- @Al Ameer son: I'm not really interested in the FAC nomination as I expect there will be a lot of to and fro with the judges and I do not find it worth the effort. It's up to you if you wish to spend the effort but you'll have to do it yourself or find someone else. cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add

Map for Austro-Tai languages
[edit]

- Austro-Tai languages

- Can someone please make a map of the Austro-Tai languages? The map would just be the map of the Tai-Kadai languages, and the Austronesian languages in one map. The map on the Austric languages article could be used as a basis, as it already includes both.

1796 U.S. presidential election map
[edit]Article(s): 1796 United States presidential election
- Request
- Convert ElectoralCollege1796 second vote.svg to a human-editable plain text format.
- I have made maps for the 4 presidential elections in the U.S. before the 12th Amendment that show how electors cast their second votes but the SVG editor I use makes my maps look a little different from the other maps. I fixed this for other election maps I've made by manually editing the SVG code to give them a human-editable plain text format but the 1796 election map is just too complicated so I can't do this one.
- I ran into the same problem with my 1788-89 map and I asked for assistance in the Commons Map workshop but I never got a response and eventually I was able to fix it. not sure I can't do that here though as this one is even more complicated thanks to the electors in Virginia and North Carolina.PharaohCrab speak𓀁 works𓀨 21:53, 24 October 2026 (UTC)

A map of JS Bach residence places
[edit]- Places where Bach lived
- Germany map
- Article(s)
- Johann_Sebastian_Bach in various languages.
- Request
- Could someone please overlay the above map of Germany with the dots (towns) shown in the above left Figure? At the moment, the left Figure is used but it quite not telling. The various towns shown have precise coordinates given in wikipedia. The lines in the left Figure indicate quite badly (they are undirected) the "itinerary" of Bach through his life:
So, the lines are useful, but if used they should be directed (arrow-like) but they may clutter the picture...
-- Frederic Y Bois (talk) 17:29, 25 October 2026 (UTC)

- I have no skill with maps or drawings. I just want to say that in my opinion this would be better without any lines - just a map of Germany with these nine places correctly shown in the normal way. The lines do show what they are meant to show, but in my opinion they block the view so much that they aren't worth it. (However, I might be persuaded differently if the lines were very very faint.) Watershed of Wollaston Lake
[edit]- Article(s)
- Wollaston Lake, Arctic Divide
- Request
- Wollaston Lake is the world's largest natural bifurcation lake. Nevertheless, I haven't been able to find a good map even off-wiki of its watershed. Many maps, even official Canadian ones, incorrectly show the Arctic Divide going through the lake itself, which is nonsensical. (This confusion is likely because the Canadian National Hydro Network map assigns a "work unit" boundary going through the lake, but work units are not intended to necessarily reflect watershed boundaries.) The map should show both the boundaries of the Wollaston Lake watershed, and the nearby path of the Arctic Divide outside it but not within or bordering it. Thanks.
